From 2001 to 2011, the price of gold rose sharply once before, from 250 to almost 2,000 USD per troy ounce. The price then consolidated for a few years. It then rose again to leave the round mark of 2,000 clearly behind in 2024. Now the price is free. Gold and silver are back at the start of the next major bull market.
The fundamental drivers for a further bull market are strong. Global debt is at a record high, government deficits are spiralling out of control and there is a threat of massive expropriation of savings through inflation and negative real interest rates. This is the basis for a major bull market in predious metals in the coming years. It should catapult precious metal prices upwards. But how can investors get started with precious metals? Here are the most important answers for you.
6 tips for your precious metal investments
- Acquire your gold and silver in physical form. Precious metals are also your ultimate security, and your ownership of them should be kept as safe as possible.
- If you take care of your own storage, you should favour standard gold bullion coins such as the Krugerrand, Philharmonic or Maple Leaf, each with a fine weight of one ounce. The spread between buying and selling is small for these coins, hardly higher than for bars. In contrast to these, resale should be easy even in extreme crisis situations.
- Pay attention to secure storage! Potential burglars probably know the best hiding places better than you do. If you store your precious metals at home, use an alarm system and a heavy safe. Talk to your household contents insurance company and arrange extra insurance cover for your precious metals. A safe deposit box is safer than storing your precious metals at home, but it is known to the state. Some gold dealers also offer safe deposit boxes. However, they are usually more expensive than bank safe deposit boxes. Make sure that the provider is reputable!
- Unfortunately, the spread between buying and selling silver coins is often very high. This is due to the minting costs and VAT. This difference must first be recouped by a price gain. Therefore, silver coins are generally only suitable for a long-term investment of several years.
- You can also store silver in duty-free warehouses in Switzerland. The advantages include the fact that no VAT is payable and that you do not have to worry about transport or storage. These advantages are usually offset by higher fees. Make sure that the provider is reputable!
- Silver typically rises even more in percentage terms than gold during precious metal price spikes. This is due to the lower supply from stored silver stocks. The ratio of the gold price to the silver price is typically below 40, as in 2011, or even below 20, as in 1980. If the ratio falls from 80 to 40, the silver price doubles in addition to the increase in gold and silver. Therefore, pay attention to the ratio of the gold price to the silver price! Favour silver with a relatively high ratio of 60, for example, and even more so with one of 80!
Take the first step now!
Investing in gold and silver is not difficult. If you follow the tips above, nothing should stand in the way of you making a tidy profit. Do not hesitate! The later you enter the bull market, the lower your overall profits will be.
How can you buy precious metals cheaply and store them safely?
Elementum Deutschland GmbH, based in Sindelfingen (Germany), specializes in trading physical precious metals. Customers who purchase precious metals from Elementum Deutschland (or one of the other national Elementum companies in five European countries) can store them in the renowned high-security vaulting facilities in the St. Gotthard Massif in Switzerland at Elementum International AG.
Of course, you also have the option of purchasing gold and silver directly and having it delivered to your desired address. However, storing silver in the so-called open duty-free warehouse (“offenes Zollfreilager”) at St. Gotthard offers decisive tax advantages:
- The 19% value added tax customary in Germany is completely waived on purchases and sales – a considerable price advantage that effectively secures you 19% more silver for your money.
- If you store your silver in this high-security vault, you can sell it back to Elementum Deutschland GmbH at any time – without any bureaucratic hassle and also without VAT, as the trade takes place within the duty-free warehouse. You will receive the funds via bank wire.
- VAT is only payable when you physically remove the stored silver – either by picking it up in person (after prior notification) or by having it shipped to your address.
More silver, more return
Thanks to duty-free storage, you receive 19% more physical silver when you buy. This additional amount also participates in the performance of the silver price if it rises – a leverage effect that significantly improves your return opportunities.
